About Us

Dressage test ridden on a Highland ponyThe Pony Riders Association (PRA) was founded in 1991 and works largely in co-operation with local riding clubs and equestrian centres, sponsoring awards at shows and events nation-wide.  In addition the Association produces a regular newsletter, hosts a range of national competitions and runs its unique Pleasure Riding Scheme for the "happy hackers" amongst its membership.

The objects of the PRA are:

  • To promote the active use of ponies (i.e. equines below 15hh excluding shoes) in all equestrian disciplines.
  • To promote the greater acceptance of adult pony riders.
  • To demonstrate the versatility and aptitude of ponies for all types of competition.
  • To encourage show organisers at all levels to include classes suitable for adult pony riders.
  • To stage a variety of competitive and non-competitive events appropriate to the membership and objects of the society.
  • To encourage the formation of affiliated regional groups working in line with the objectives of the PRA.
  • To provide members with details of appropriate events occurring at all levels and in all disciplines.
  • Although the PRA is primarily for the benefit of adult pony riders, we acknowledge the peer pressure applied to junior pony riders to "move up" to a horse.  We therefore aim to support and encourage those juniors whose wish is to keep their ponies.
